Ms. Gay's development of the characters was quick, and her writing makes one feel like they are right in the story, part of what is going on. I love the Southern sayings mixed into the story as well. What a fantastic book! I grew up in a small town in Virginia and couldn't wait to get out of there. As the years have gone by I've needed to go home and help with my aging mother. It is amazing how many things I missed growing up, and feel fortunate to be able to catch some of them the second time around. The author as really penned a book that resonates with me!
Oh Melissa Powell Gay, you and Iris cost me so much sleep last night! Your wonderful book arrived Monday and I finished it at 1248 last night....so many wonderful memories have rushed to my mind after reading your pages. I haven't heard anyone say "I swannee" since my long-departed Grandmother. I can't wait for the next installment to see what Iris' next adventure is! Great job!
Excellent first novel. A coming home story with more humor than "The Return of the Native," and without the fatalism. Great read. Had trouble putting it down.
A great book. Anyone with ties to Virginia or the south will enjoy this book and the culture it illustrates. While reading it you can relate many of the twists & turns to life in general. From the title “When are You Leaving” to the last chapter, if you have ever dealt with aging parents laying this book down once started is difficult.
I usually read murder mysteries and this book was a wonderful reprieve from those. I actually found myself looking forward to putting the book down to read later because I looked forward to picking it up and reading it again. There were dozens of instances where I smiled, chuckled, or down right laughed at some of the stuff the main character (Iris) came up with. Great character development!! Ms. Gay asks the question "When are You Leaving"? I'm asking her when is she coming back. Very much looking forward to her next book!!!
Can you really go home? Iris did and it was some really cool. Finished it in a couple of days. It's one of those books that as you read it you don't realize how much of it you've consumed. Great read Ms Gay. Thanks.
I thoroughly enjoyed "When Are You Leaving" by Melissa Powell Gay. It was a fun read with a great plot, and really likable characters. It's a coming home story that uses mystery and comedy to tell the story of Iris Lee, an out-of-work corporate executive forced to go back to her childhood home and aged parents, as she discovers what home really is and why. The book has many memorable moments and well drawn scenes. I still chuckle every time I think about Iris, Bert and Elizabeth in the yellow Pacer headed to the city. I highly recommend this book. Reading it will leave you analyzing your life motives and desires and wondering if you are where you are really meant to be, or are you following a dream that will never completely fulfill you. I am anxiously awaiting a sequel.
